Artichoke Festival

The artichoke is California’s official vegetable. This is the 60th year Castroville is hosting their annual artichoke festival at the Monterey County Fair on June 1-2.

The history of artichokes in California started in 1922, the first artichoke shoot was planted castroville. Now, 100% of artichokes are grown in California.

Originally, the festival was to celebrate the harvest and growth of artichokes in Castroville. Today, it funds local, non-profit businesses, that depend on the event for success.

Locals aren’t the only ones attending and participating in the event. In 1948, Marilyn Monroe had the title of being the first honorary “Artichoke Queen.” Since then, the official festival started and continues to attract people from all over the place.

People of all ages are welcomed to this event. There will be artichoke eating contests; artichoke cooking demos; a tour of an artichoke farm; artichoke art; and more! There will be activities for kids too so no one is left out.

On Saturday the event will go on from 10am-6pm. On Sunday it’ll go on from 10am-5pm. Tickets are, $15 for adults and $5 for kids.
